They are safe because I used I-glow tubes which are made for the engine and can take some abuse. There are actually three 20" tubes in the grills, two upper and one lower. All are installed behind supports so nothing can hit them directly. I like they way it looks alot. I will need more in the engine to illuminate the polished S/C.

Just be careful of rocks and crap.
I did that with mine when I first got her and the neons slowly got busted one after another.
I did the ones on the inside and beleive it or not I like them for more then just looks also. There nice to see whats on the floor if you drop somthing or for just getting in and out of the truck. The blue looks pretty sweet though! I did the green neons to match the dash and there pretty good.
