Explain To Me Why Anyone Would Want An Standard Tranny

I dont understand the question why would we want a standard transmission unless you want to road course race.

these things are for the drag strip..

Automatic will woop the standard everytime..

When the SRT-10's come out..Its gonna take the Dodge guys alot of practice..and a lot of clutches to even get close on a launch

Automatic..forever!!!

You are assuming that all auto's are faster then their manual counterparts??

Auto's are more consistant.
Manuals can be faster, but suffer driver error.

I wouldn't want a manual tranny in my daily driven truck. I'm glad the Lightning has an automatic. However...

I wouldn't have a sports car with an automatic. My friends say I'm crazy for not putting an auto in my Vette that I drag race often. An auto would be faster(than a 1969 Muncie 4-speed), more consistant, and better on the driveline. So why don't I want one? Fun. I enjoy having to worry about the launch and making good shifts. For racing automatics are too automatic for me. There is no excitement in going down the track with them. I need to do more than just mash the pedal. Call me crazy but that's what I like.

Manual is more of a challenge in the 1/4 and more fun, IMO. My '99 SS was an M6 and after learning how to drive it, I ran a best of 13.3 @ 106 stock. That was after making two prior passes and never having raced it before. I haven't seen any stock A4 '99s post better times. From what I've read, typically, stock M6 vs. A4 (driver factored in) = M6 a couple of tenths quicker.

My '72 Mach I was a 4-speed and I wouldn't have wanted it any other way.

The L being an auto is acceptable because with about 420 HP and 520TQ, I can deal.

WHY??? I guess you've never raced two equall cars other than one having a stick and the other a slushbox?

Give me a stick anyday!

As a matter of fact two weeks ago I felt out of place when running the 1/4 at Milan. Once I launched there was nothing more to do other than stab and steer.

I'm use to doing full on 1-2, 2-3, 3-4 shifts in my old stang. Those were the days!

I'd rather eat worms than drive an automatic.

Wink

Just get a chip and that takes care of any advantage a stick had of being faster.

This is starting to sound like a silly arguement..I dont think one can shift faster than an auto..but oh well..

Maybe I should race a Remmington 870 pump against an Browning A-5???

LOL

Talking

In my '72 GTO i rebuilt the tranny with a shift kit and a manual valve body. Now I get to do all the shifting manually with an auto tranny (TH400). It's the best of both worlds

Well... being that anytime I floor it under 35mph all I do is spin... it would be nice if I could control both the gas and clutch!! I know what you are saying as far as the shifts being faster in a well tuned L, but I really think that with riding the clutch, we could launch better with a stick.

I say 5-spd all the way!!! there is just something missing when you have something fast and all you do is just put the petal to the floor. there is no driving skill in that what so ever. but when you are slammin the gears there is nothing like it. thats what seperates the "DRIVERS" from the "drivers." even though I said 5-spd a think a 6-spd in the Lighning would be da bomb!!!
