Question Is This Engine Similar to the one in the Supra?

I know this is off-topic, but I was wondering if the enigne in my wife's Lexus GS300 is similar to the engine in the Supra TT (without the turbos, of course). It is a 3.0L inline six, with some pretty good looking headers too! It is rated 220 HP.

Yep, 3.OL inline six. Same as the non turbo Supra.

If it's and older model GS, then yes, I believe it is..............If you can find out the engine code, I can tell you for sure. The non-Turbo Supra, and the Lexus SC300's have an engine code of 2JZ-GE, whilst the TT Supra engine code is 2JZ-GTE (same block of course, with the addition of the turbos, therefore the additional T in the code)..........there's a ton of SC300 turbos running around, but I can't say I can recall too many turbo'd GS's...............

hope this helps,
JC

Hey guys, thanks for helping me satisfy my curiousity!
The car is a 1998 model GS300. I will have to check the engine code when I get home.

MiamiWhiteSVT-L: you seem to know your Toyota/Lexus vehicles very well!

If you are thinking about forced induction, this site has both turbo and supercharger applications for the the GS300. Over 300 rwhp with either kit.

For what it's worth before i bought my L i was doing a lot of research on Supras and the non turbo and turbo engines are actually quite different. I don't remember exactly what all it was but i remember everyone saying it would cost an absolute fortune to try to turn a non turbo car into one capable of competing with a factory turbo car.

Those kits do look really sweet though.

Well, I really considered getting me a TT Supra instead of the Lightning, but nothing beats getting a brand new monster, instead of one that would likely be mistreated.

However, if all goes well, my gf may be getting one sometime in the next 12-18 months, unless she goes with a used Cobra or a new 350Z..............we'll see how it works.

Also, I registered over at www.supraforums.com
That board is awesome.........lots of cool guys over there, met up with a few a while back

good luck

My wife also has a GS300 (a 2001 model) and I believe that anything post-98 is going to be difficult to find hop-up parts for. The VVT-i and ECU seem to be stumbling blocks on these motors. Swift Racing was supposed to come out with a supercharger for the GS series cars over a year ago and I haven't seen one out yet, XS Engineering has a turbo for the IS300 that just came out that can probably be adapted to the GS but will require some serious tranny work as it puts out about 415 hp and 420 ft.-lbs., Pete Farrell Supercars has been working on the IS for a while and doesn't have anything out yet. Swift Racing and Rod Millen Motorsports do offer cold air intake kits but $400-$600 for 5 horsepower seems a little steep...at least when it's going on her car. She finally got tired of her slow car (8.0 sec 0-60) and we bought her a new toy this weekend - a 2000 911 Carrera. She can't complain anymore about being beaten by minivans and she's got her dream car. I'll be in line for the next toy in the household now.

And I've also looked into getting a TT Supra so have done some research on those motors. The block is the same but the bottom end is different and the heads are significantly differrent. Although you can drop a 2JZ-GTE into a Lexus GS as the engine dimensions are identical...the only problem would be the computer/ECU portion of the swap.

My wife's car is not what I would call "fast", but it has no problem beating minivans... it is not much off the line, but at highway speeds it is pretty snappy!

If you wanted fast, you should have opted for the GS400... a 4.0L V8 with a paddle shifter!

Hindsight is 20/20 but in 2001 the GS400's became the GS430's and the "Sport Shift" wasn't an option in the 430's but the GS300's did come with that standard and at the time the 430 didn't seem like it was $10,000 faster. If I had it to do all over again we'd go straight for the M-B CLK55 AMG or a low-mileage M5...live and learn.

The AMG CLK55 or an M5........... One of life's sweetest dilemmas.

I've just put myself up for adoption.

My father, a Ford employee for 26 years, picked up a silver '02 AMG CLK 55 convertible two weeks ago. Man is it sweet. He bleeds Ford blue, but only drives them as demo's.

I'm going to wait until I get my chip and pulley installed before I'll tangle with that thing. It's stout.

although rated at 13.9 in the 1/4, my 430 doesn't feel any faster than the GS400. i loved the old paddle shifters, but there was always a delay on downshifting. the stick on the 430 does the same thing, and is a little more natural.

If you want to know more about the Lex..check out www.clublexus.com , arguably the best site around for Lexus, you may be sorry though...that is you may get bit by the mod bug. Lots of modded GS's there.
