Question about fuel filter and picking up hp

So if your truck seems to be running fine but you have not changed the fuel filter in 12k miles will it gain you anything to change it? I am going to the track for what might be the last time this year (first time w/mods) and wanna make it count!

It should help. You could always make a run and then change the filter. Let us know how it goes.

Part number: Motorcraft FG-986B

You should be able to get the tool from any local auto parts store.

It shouldn't help, especially with only 12k miles. But it won't hurt either. A fuel pressure gauge sure is nice. As soon as mine drops by as little as a half pound, it's out of there.

I think that my pressures are:
30.5 decelerating
32 idle
38 on flat ground cruse control set at 65 (75 at the track)
52 WOT

Hey... I posted yesterday or the day before about changing my fuel filter... My drive afterwards ended up with nothing but ...

Was it running bad before... not really... I had just toasted a Vett so it couldn't be too bad.

I have 30k miles and more than likely I'll change it with every oil filter change...

An earlier post prompted me to change it and that guy had a 2002 with 6k miles on it, cut the filter open and it was full of red crud...

It's cheap... it's easy... and the results is awesome!

I think its a good idea to change them every 5000 miles on these trucks. My 01 only has 8000 miles and I changed mine last week. After removing one you should be able to blow air through it......I couldnt hardly blow through my old one at all. I cut it in half and it was full of black crud!! Of course I didnt notice any HP gains, buts its good piece of mind.

My trucks got almost 16 thousand on the clock. Looks like I'll be doing this along with the oil change. I'll chime in if I notice any gains.

It's cheap insurance and might prevent going lean at WOT.

Here's mine at 6,000 Miles. Only used Amoco 93 octane from two
""brand new stations"" Amoco will never ever get another cent from me as long as I live.

Thought mine was running good too, went to the track and:

These NGK TR-6's had 800 miles on them

Here's what did it

"CHANGE IT NOW", you have everything to lose, "like your motor".
And everything to gain like a 12 Sec Run

One week later,
1st time out with Denso IT 22's, Filter-Chip-n-4lb-Pulley

I just changed my fuel filter. 4600 miles on this one. Back flow of fuel was muddy looking. No sediment this time but very rusty\muddy appearence. Last one had some sediment in it and muddy appearance as well, 10000 miles on that one..5000 is my limit now. On the previous filter @ 10000 miles I had trouble attaining top end. Don't scrimp here.....

LIGHTNINROD hit the nail right on the head. It's not so much HP you worry about, it's the motor starving for gas at the track and then causing a lean condition, I'm sure I was seconds from throwing a rod as a result of something as simple as a gas filter.
You see how fast it melted those three plugs, God knows what it did to the inside of my Motor A 02 w/6k on it when that happen. And God knows where the missing pieces went or what damage that caused. Only time will tell
