Dad gave me his 85 trans am to drive in the winter....yeah i know, but better than driving my truck. Not too familiar with these cars/engines at all. Always been a ford guy. The carb needs replacing. It has a 305 in it. Not sure what i should get for a carb. Something that works, nothing special. Also has 15' stock wheels which i want to put winter tires on . What's the skinniest tire i can put on there. 195's too small??

Don, the plain ol' Quadra-jets are pretty decent. You can get em in a junk yard and throw a rebuild kit in it. I think I had the Carter on my old Cheby. I replaced it with a 600 Holley square bore vac. secondary and hated it. Stick with the Quadra-junk! Gimmi a buzz if you need help...978-317-1773. Still on vacation, no plans day or night!!!!

1985 was the first year for TPI, but the base engine still had a good old 4bbl. Check and see which carb'd 305 it is. I'm doing this by memory, so please excuse if I make an error. There were still 2 carb'd engines available in '85. The first was the base engine (LG4), with either a 5 speed manual or 4 speed automatic, and optional was the 5.0 HO (L69) available with a 5 speed only. I believe the LG4 was around 160bhp and the L69 was 190bhp. In either case, both used a good old Rochester Q-Jet. I believe the jets were larger on the L69. I would stick with the Q-Jet, just because it's a winter car, and you're not likely to want to mod it. To get the most value out of a nice Holley, you would probably end up swapping the intake as well. Check with the dealer. GM makes a lot of different rebuild kits for those carbs. It'll probably end up being a lot cheaper.

Not too familiar with the later pontiacs, but is that Carb a 2 or 4 barrel? With that small displacement, I would imagine its a 2? If it's a 2 and you want a 4 barrel, you'll need to get an intake. My suggestion is to get an edelbrock intake/carb combo. I am partial to Holleys, but they need constant tuning, and for street use that can be a pain sometimes. Just get a 600cfm carb too, anything more would be too much.
And since you have entered the wonderful world of pontiacs (eventhough the motor in that car is just a corporate GM block) I would suggest going to www.classicalpontiac.com, they are to pontiacs what this forum is to the Lightnings.
