4.88's

im gettin jus shy of 3k back from taxes this year so im buyin my 5"inch RCD lift for my 97 flareside 4wd reg cab. I already have the 35 inch tires and fancy new wheels. but since im gettin a good chunk of change back i figured i could regear right away too. especially since its got a 4.6

so my question is what have you guys spent on gears for your trucks...cost and installation?
i want to do 4.88's front and rear

around here (central FL) i got an average of 350 labor for the front and 250 for the rear then what ever parts cost,

normally around 1200-1600 depending on shop rates.

Im kinda glad that im going 1 ton. The gears are already in the axles that i bought. as well as lockers.

I paid $1100 here in nebraska at a local shop parts and labor. Most places wanted waaay more. This shop let me take them just the differentials, they installed the gears, then I reinstalled them on the truck. The brand of gear will make a difference in cost too, but dont get a cheap one.

this will cut labor WAY down. The mechanic only has to open the diff and set the gears up this saves ALOT of time which saves you money.

thanks for bringing that up noblem

I had a 98 model and ran 40inch swampers with 4.56 precision gears. It was a perfect gear ratio to tire diameter combo. 4.88's will work but I don't think you'll need them that low, when I got the rear end apart I noticed a clearance issue between the ring and housing. I don't believe I could've fit 4.88's or lower because of the thickness of the ring.
I did the install myself but $1000 to $1250 for gears and install is all would pay.

exactly. the 38's are gonna have to wait a little. i need my wider wheels, can't run 13.50-14.50 in tires on stock 7.5 in rims, lol.

and i'm not running 38's on stock gears. my buddy has went through two transmissions so far on his 03 w/ 38's and stock gearing.

so, the 38's are coming after the wheels and gears, i may not get the bigger tires for another six months or so.
