Autozone will loan you the tool to remove. Turn in the direction of rotation. On my 99 4.2 it was left.

the one you need from autozone is for the older 4.9L and 5.0 V8, same fan size and waterpump size....

ok cool anyone got an idea on how to hold the water pump from turning? seems like when i turn the fan to loosen it it turns the pump, im assuming standard threads on that thing ( righty tighty, lefty loosey).

there is a huge wrench, shaped like a boxy U that you put over the four bolts on the W/P, and put a breaker bar onto the wrench for added leverage

alright got the boxy u wrench, it seems to hold the water pump it came with a 54mm boxy u wrench to hold the water pump, anyone have any idea what size the fan actually is? it came with a 40mm wrench but its to large a bit for the fan. what do u fellas recomend to use on the actual fan? is it a 36mm? did u just use a adjustable wrench? i got this thing licked if i can take the fan off.. thanks for the info on the boxy u wrench patman, turns out i had my head in my **** and didnt even think the tool i had was to hold the water pump. i was just using it to turn the fan off the water pump.. thanks alot again, man i feel like a real rocket scientist..

Mine required a 1-7/16 or 1-3/8 open end wrench. I can't remember which end of the combo it was - I think the 1-7/16 though.
It should not take more than a good bump to break the fan loose. If you can get someone to hold the wrench on the pully, just bump the wrench on the fan with a short handle sledge hammer - just make sure you are turning the correct direction.

It is threaded backwards. YOu may be trying to tighten it.
