New Eaton Posi, bad gear oil smell

I gave up on the powertraxs, and tried the eaton posi, so far, less noise and seems to be pretty smooth and work a little better. I had the mechanic put some amsoil gear oil and some friction modifier, but i was driving out of town and i can smell a really bad gear oil smell, i look under the truck and where the driveshaft connects to the rear end i can see some smoke on top of the rear end casing. could this be some gear oil that could have leaked out or could the gears be getting to hot? im not sure what it is, but it scares me and i hate the smell, never had the prob before.

Is the stuff you put in with the Eaton synthetic? I heard you shouldn'r run synthetic until you've broken it in.

I have an Eaton Posi in my 74 Nova and can't say I recall having a similar smell from the outside. Of course the old fluid smelled like **** but it was very old.

Really like the Eaton unit personally.

Sorry to hear about your dislike for the Powertrax. I was considering it as an option to my LS sometime down the road.

I dont think that your pinion should get hot enough to make smoke like you say. It seems to me that something is not right and you should get it checked out.

Good luck.
