34-spline axle

Hi All,

I bent my right rear axle on my 9.75. When removing the old axle the spline count was 34 and I am having trouble with finding this part. Can anyone help identify this axle. The rear-end is a 4:10 (3:55 stock), 9.75 LS in an 01 1/2 ton. Is this a common part? Any info would be appreciated!!

Thank you.

I'd say that most likely its going to be a dealer part. If not you'll have to look in bone yards for one. Only problem with that is that you most likely won't be allowed to pull the axle shaft out to check the spline count. Most junkyards around here are real PITA about not letting you do stuff like that.

Bit the bullet

Thanks for the response. I guess there are two 34-spline axles for the 9.75. One has a 1.618 diameter bearing and the other has a 1.705. Supposedly, the 1.618 was for pre-1999 trucks the the larger diameter was for 2000 + trucks. I have a 2001 but somehow received the smaller diameter axle. No problem (other than wondering what else on my truck is 1999 stock) I don't think .080 of an inch will make a big strength difference. I'll just be glad to get my truck back.

Its not in strength of the shaft itself, its in fitting in the bearins. If its too small there will be too much gap between that and the bearings causing you to lunch your bearings, shaft, and possibly your entire housing. Gotta make sure you have right shaft, that .080 doesn't seem that much but it makes a HUGE difference.

Yes, I agree, .08 is gigantic by tollerance stadards!! I wasn't clear in my post, I *originally* had the smaller (pre-2000) axle shaft on my 2001 (for some reason) and I am going to replace it with the same shaft. Hope to be back on (and off) the road by Monday. Thanks again for checking in with my little drama.
