That's usually what I do is is when making the bead just go around the outer side of the bolt hole then after I have gotten my one complete bead i go back and just connect the bead with a straight line on the other side of the bolt hol. HOWEVER I will not need to do any od this with the new diff cover i am getting since it haas an O-ring on it for a seal.

Question

I did mine last saturday and put a bead of black RTV silicone all the way around and also around each bolt hole and I have a tiny leak. I don't know how this happened as I thought that I had plenty of sealant on there. Wish I would have known about the gasket at Autozone as I would have gone with that. What is the torque spec for the bolts on rear diff cover? Maybe I over tightened, they seemed pretty tight when I removed them and I torqued to 25 ft. lbs when re-installed. Did I overtighten?

Well I installed my Mag-Hytec a few days ago and the torque specs for it are 12-16 ft.lbs. which really isnt much you get to thinking boy that can't be tight enough but it is, so you may have tightened to much and also did you tighten in an alternating pattern like you would with a wheel so as to not cause distortion or warping by tighting one side before the other it can cauase a problem. You should always use a criss-cross pattern when tightening bolts to distribute the load evenly. It probably isn't needed for lots of things but i do it out of habit with everything i tighten.

Thumbs up

BlueOval, thanks for the info. I am going to get a gasket and re-do it. I would like to reuse the gear oil I just put in because it was 17.00 a quart at the dealer. Think this would be ok if I had a clean pan and completely degreased the diff cover and got rid of any dirt around it?

Oh yeah,at that much a quart I would.Just loosen the bolts enough to pry it open and you might want to strain it thru a paper towel or something similar. You know there is cheaper oil prices out there.I used RedLine 80W140 at $7.95 a quart, synthetic of course.Good luck!

SogShooter this is justa suggestion you do what you want to do . But you should really consider buying oil somwhere else. My local parts store carries Redline and it is selling for 8.87 a quart which is about half what you are paying at the dealer. You may even want to consider mail order and plan in advance. You can go to www.redlineoil.com and locare a local dealer in your area that carries it.

Or get some Royal Purple ($8/qt) and the gasket at some NAPAs like I did. Call first to verify they have stock.

My local NAPA store does not carry Royal Purple so like Hapnzap said call.

Richard D.

I just placed an order thru Jegs for 12 quarts of 5w30 of the Royal Purple engine oil.Cheaper than buying it locally.
