D44, 8.8 or 9.75

Ok, I know this is for newer trucks but thought I would ask anyway. I have a 92 f150 4x4 ext cab longbed. Friday night on my way home from work (no Really) taking off from light not hotroding (no really) something went BANG CLANG CRASH just like that. I called a friend for a tow and about 200 yards down the road, the driver side wheel and spindle started to catch up to me in the drivers seat and the right wheel and spindle started to lag behind the axle case is still very nicely in place. Needless to say I have a very messed up rearend I took pictures this afternoon and will post asap. Currently it is a 8.8 and the front is a D44. I have been trying to decide weather or not to just replace the 8.8 or go to a 9.75 or D44. I have read that the 9.75 is a direct bolt up to 2000 and up models. I know I can get a d44 for right at $600 but don't know if it is a direct bolt up. As for the 8.8 I have heard/read a LOT of messages about broken 8.8s. Any info on swapping either the d44 or the 9.75 on a 92 would be very much appreciated <-spelling. Is the d44 a better axle?

Thanks
Banz

The D44 is typically a front axle. They come in D44 and D44TTB axles for half tons, one being solid the other being TTB which you have. The D44 was offered as a rear in some jeeps and thus would be too narrow for your application. You don't want to run the 9.75 axle as its 5x135mm pattern ONLY and you have 5x5.5" pattern so you'd have to mix and match wheels. The 8.8 is an ox axle, I've never had problems with the one in my 97 or the one in my dads 91. If you want to swap out your 8.8 in your 92 find a 9" out of a late 70s F150 or a 78/79 Bronco. You may have to modify the spring perchs some to get the right width and possibly move the shock mounts, but aside from that you will have the right pattern and get the advantages of the 9" like the pinion support.

Powerstroke,

Thanks for the input. So besides for the dealing with 2 spairs, are there ANY Other drawbacks to the 9.75?

Thanks again

I think there might be some speed sensor and ABS incompatibility problems between the 8.8 you have and the 9.75 that you'd be looking at. Bottom line its going to be easier and cheaper to find a 9" and swap that in.
