9.75 rear carrier changout
I've got an open diff 4x4 (that is the stupidest thing) so maybe it is really a 3x4.(joke) Anyway, I found a L/S unit in good shape but it came with 3.73 gears and I have 3.55s. My ? is will my gears go on the 3.73 carrier, I had a Ranger last and the split in gears where the carrier changed was 3.73 and up numericly. Just want to know if the carriers are different sizes depending on gears for the 9.75 rear.
Thanks,
Mike

Gearhead,
Thanks but that wasn't really my question. The L/S carrier had 3.73 gears on it. My current carrier has 3.55 gears on it. I intend to take my ring gear off my open carrier and put it on the L/S carrier then install it. I want to know if the carriers are different sizes. On most other types of rear ends there are typically 3 different size carriers. One for gears up to 2.73, one for 3.08 thru 3.55 and one for 3.73 and up. I want to know if the 9.75 is the same.
Thanks,
Mike

What you're asking is if there is a stage II or stage III carrier that you need for your diff. In the Rangers you're right, the stage 2 is 3.73 and up. With the 9.75 I don't think there is a split there at 3.73, but not 100% for sure. You're gonna wanna be real careful when you take the carrier out so that you don't damage any of the shims and make sure you keep them in the right order. The best way to do it is to get an install kit for the carrier bearings since you're using a different set of bearings for the new carrier.
