WWBF150,

I tried what you said. Ran the truck up to 55 in 4WD. Still had the whine. Guess I'll ask the dealer about it when it goes in for the 5k service.

Dennis,

Where did you go to run your 4WD up to 55?

Dennis, did you try shifting your truck into and out of 4WD as you were moving? If I do this with my truck, the noise will stop as the front axle engages and the truck goes into 4WD. Then I take and shift my truck into 2WD, and the noise starts up immediately. Ford has finally admitted a problem with this. The noise is from the front differential. If your noise is present all of the time, it may be something else.
If I hear of anything else, I'll be sure to post it. WWBF150 Tom.

Triton,

Did it on a paved road. Stayed as straight as possible to minimize driveline windup.. Only kept it in 4WD just long enough to see if the whine was still there. Truck's got less than 3,000 miles on it, so wasn't too worried about different tire diameters.

There are some dirt roads around that I can hit 60 in 4WD, but I wasn't about to drive 2 hours to get there...

WWBF150,

Yup... Put it in and out of 4WD a couple of times at around 50 mph. No change in the whine I hear. It's not really loud, but the only way it's not irritating is if I have the radio on fairly loud.

Dennis, my truck quiets right down after I switch to 4WD. As soon as I switch to 2WD, the whining starts. I can do this at any speed under 55mph as that is the top speed for the shift-on-the-fly system. It's possible that you may have a different problem than I have with my truck. I'd bring it back and see what the dealer tells you. Hopefully, you won't have to go through the BS that I have had to go through. As I said earlier, if I hear anything, I'll be sure to post it for you. Tom.

WWBF150,

Yup sounds like we have a different problem.. Truck goes in for service in a month or so and I'll get them to work on that irritating whine.

Well, I finally got my "award" from arbitration, and what an "award" it is! If I accept my "award" these are the terms: I get to bring my truck back in for more repairs, with no guarantees that my truck will be fixed this time either. I have to call the "Dispute Resolution Specialist" idiot from Ford and set up an appointment. I have to pay for the call too. This is the same idiot that kept telling me "go ahead and arbitrate it, we're not doing anymore." Ford will try to get it done in 30 days, but there is no incentive or penalty for them to do either. In other words, the DSB is just a mouthpiece for Ford and the other auto makers. The sad part is, the parts for an attempted fix have been on order for 35 days and they are not in yet. Perhaps if they wait long enough, the 2000 models will be out. Either that, or my truck will be out of warranty first. This has been going on since October 12, 1998. I guess that 8+ months isn't long enough for Ford to fix this problem. This is the biggest bunch of BS that I've ever seen. It seems that the consumer has no rights or recourse except to sue. Perhaps, this is just what Ford wants. Tom.

As i am having trouble with my steering on my 99 F150,it gives me chills because now I have to deal with the Ford regional rep, which I've waited 4 weeks so far.The service manager where I bought it has the all to frequent aloof attitude, you can see it in his eyes..."I really don't care about your problem". When business is good,it seems service falters,it's too bad there wasn't better competition in the auto industry.....what's that saying....Absolute power corrupts absolutely!!!
Reading the above posts makes me sick, literally.I for one, will not let Ford or any other business get away with such BS either.

Keep after 'em guys. I think their tactict in these matters is to put you off as long as possible in the hopes that you will just go away. I've had the same problem, only its been the infamous "piston slap." After a year or so of communications they are finally going to put a new engine in my truck.

The e-mail feature on the Ford website is as an effective a tool as any I've come across in a while. Make sure they hear you - at as many different levels of the corporation you can find.

Good Luck!

Thumbs up

I finally got the order in for my 2000 SD F-250 SC. Ford is getting my 1999 F-150 SC back as soon as my SD comes in. All I can say is, I'm glad it will be theirs and not mine. WWBF150.

I was informed that there is now a Special Service Message # 12678 on this problem. There are a number of parts that need to be replaced in the front differential, gears etc. I also have the part numbers if anyone wants them. If this can fix the problem I was told that a TSB will be issued to correct this in any trucks with this problem. I guess that the dealer doesn't know his behind from first base when he said that this is a normal characteristic of the Ford drivetrain. Thanks again for all your help and encouragement. I'm still allowing the arbitration to go forward. Tom.
sorry to bring up an old topic but i'm having this same problem and i've had my truck worked on 3 times, can someone who's had this done email me the parts that they had replaced and what specific TSB's they used (i wanna see if my dealership replaced all the right stuff)
you can email me @ chris@cbisd.com
