Question rear end clanging noise

Have a 94 F150 2wd automatic that has ~115K miles. It's making a clanging noise in what I think is the rear under light to moderate acceleration at speeds above 25mph. It's especially noisy when going up a slight hill, requiring the trans to downshift out of overdrive. It sort of gets hung up between 3rd gear and overrdrive. If I ease up on the gas, the noise will stop. Anyone have any ideas? Allentown, PA.

Take it to a transmission shop and have the tranny checked. You can normally get this done for free. I did. A good transmission shop will remove the drive shaft and run the vehicle in drive gear and listen for noises. They allowed me to stand right under the truck when they did this. It was a bad tranny. I took it to Ford, ( warranty ) and they replaced the tranny. Noise went away. It may be worth investigating.
