how do i know if i have the 9.75 or 8.8?

2002 4x2 f150 5.4 with limited slip 3.55 gears, if it helps. do the 9.75" rears only come on 4x4's and lightnings?

thank you for your help.

There should be a tag on the rear diff cover that tells you what you have. It will have the ratio and the size. Mine (2000 F150 Supercab 4x4) had 3L55 9.75 on it meaning it has a 3.55 ratio with a locker and it is a 9.75 ring gear.

cool, i will check that out. one more question, tho. if i were to look for gears, could i buy any set that fits that rear end size, or do i need to get something specifically for the limited slip?

5.4 = 9.75" Any 1997 or newer 9.75" ring and pinion set will fit, open or LS. Fewer companies make this size and there are fewer ratio options as well. For example there are no 4.30s between 4.10s and 4.56s like the 8.8" rear end. Installation kits DO have a difference. There are installation kits for 2000 or newer and kits for 1997 to late 1999.

The engine size is a good indicator.

4.2/4.6 = 8.8
5.4 = 9.75
5.4 (250 LD/7700 group) = 10.25

Those are definates but you can also just look at it. 8.8's are round and the 9.75 is oblonged towards the passenger side.
