4.6 triton drk toreador red w/ grey int.
17 "aluminum wheels
manual transfer case on the floor

where and how do i find out what 's in it for a rear end, you know
those numbers everyone posts that i can't seem to find...
please help and be gentle ..
though i'm NOT new to the 4 wheel driving, ( i had a jeep for 5 years before trading it for my new truck ) i AM new to caring
about what's making it tick. ( i blame you uncanny cast of characters for that ) this site totally rocks and you guys are driving some killer rigs. I know that what i've started with is a great rig but you guys make it apparent there's still SO much more it can be ( oh ya )
thanks in advance for you help.....

It could be either an 8.8 or 9.75. Both of the numbers refer to the ring gear diameter. All of the 5.4L get the 9.75, and most of the 4.6L get the 8.8, but I've seen a few that have gotten 9.75. If you look at the rear center section its obvious on the difference. The 9.75 has gussets cast into the end of the housing where the axle tubes come out on both the top and the bottom. The shape of the diff is also somewhat reminicent of a dana axle. The 8.8 doesn't have the gussets and the diff is almost a circle. Its cross between that and a rounded square.
