Drive Gear For The Vss Gear?

i have a '97 f-150 4X4 , 4r70w auto trans. with a 4.2 v6 and 3.55 rearend. it came stock with 235/75/16s i moved up to 265s awhile back and i'm looking to bring my speedo back to par with a vss gear change. With so much info that i have read on the posts here, there is alot of conflicting info. My questions for anyone are these?

-Is the vss gear in the tranny or tranfer case?

-Does the dealership know what drive gear size my tranny will have so i can get the right tooth count?

-what is the cable running from the top of the rear diff. back to the cab?

thanks for the help ya'll........

1997 f-150, remanf. 4.2 v6, auto trans., 265 mudders, high rate torsion bars, with 118 to 120k miles on her........

The sensor you're talking about on the rear axle is another VSS sensor, but the speedo and odometer do not take their readings from there. They take their readings from the VSS sensor on the transfer case. Now as far as which gear to get the dealership needs to know what gear you have in there now. They are color coded and thats how they can look them up. There are a couple different ones for each tire size as I've found out so thats why they need to know which kind you have in your truck. What I would do is either take it off and drive something else to the dealership or drive the truck there and pull the VSS gear there in the parking lot (takes about 2 min). Since 265/75/16 (same as 265/70/17) is a stock tire size all they have to do is match the tooth count, pitch, etc.

When I changed mine, stock was a 20 tooth black gear. I swapped it for a 19 tooth tan gear from the Ford parts counter.
