Gear Change for 2000 Expedition

I appologize ahead of time if this was covered before. I have a 2000 Expedition 5.4L with 3.31 gears. I tow a 6400lb camper with it. I am ready to change out the gearing. Would you recommend the 3.73 or 4.10. We tow mainly on the east coast about 6 times a year, so fuel economy (as to be expected with an Expo) is a concern. The only other mods I've done is a K&N FIPK and gibson cat back exhaust with a custom super chip from Troyer Performance. Any advice would be appreciated - Thank You!.

Do you have stock height tires and do you plan on always having them? Taller tires will trim down your towing performance. Going from 3.31 to either of those ratios will be a huge improvement. If mileage is your main concern, 3.73s would be a nice overall ratio. I'm a big fan of 4.10s, but I'd rather have a bit more towing ability and performance than mileage.

Thanks for the reply Mr. Mitchell

I purchased LT265 75 R16 Tires after the firestone recalls. I plan on staying with these tires. I am looking for more pulling performance on grades. The wife wants to go to Tenn. and i am afraid to tow it there with my current set up - I feel I am putting too much stress on the transmission. Thanks again for your reply.

You're Welcome ! I think you're right about re-gearing being a good idea. Those are pretty tall tires. I still think either gear would be a good choice. It will just be a small tradeoff between mileage and performance.
