How do I drain grease/oil from rear-end/transfer case?

I have a 1999 F-150 4x4. I figured it's about high time I changed the grease in the rear end and front transfer case (I hope I have the terminology correct). How do I drain them? I looked at the rear end and I do not see a drain plug? Do I need to pull the whole back cover off on the rear end? What type of grease do I need? Sorry for the novice questions ..... thanx.

Thanks, big time! That leaves me w/ one more question. To take off the rear cover, can I use a standard 6 point socket? It seemed to me that the bolt heads did not seem to have nice, strong points to them but somewhat rounded so it made me think that it might require a special socket. I'm the original owner so I know there's never been a wrench on these. Also, metric or standard?

On the ford 8.8 a 6point is good. There isn't a "special tool" that I know of for the cover. I believe the bolt heads are a 12mm, but don't quote me on it. It could be the 15 mm. They are metric though.

Just use silicone sealant and torque everything snug.

The rear diffy isn't under any pressure, and the oil is relatively thick - just have to ensure a good seal.

The rear takes 75W140 full synthetic, and if it's LS, a bottle of friction modifier from the dealer. The front takes 75W90 or 80W90, regular or synthetic. The transfer case takes Mercon ATF.

Yes, there is a procedure for applying the sealer to the rear cover. It's recommended to use the sealer from the dealer, other sealers may work okay but there are instances where the synthetic fluid will leak past it.
