1998 & 2001 F150 with 8.8, 3.55 ratio both have rear-end whine.
The 1998 is unbearable!

For me, the only cure for the rear axle whine on my '01 Screw with 3.55LS was replacement of the entire rear axle assembly - housing, gears, bearings, everything. My local dealer (who I must give props to for being very cooperative through the whole process) rebuilt the diff twice under warranty, with little success at stopping the whine. Finally, after consulting with the regional reps and FoMoCo engineering, they replaced the entire assembly, (at 35,800 miles), and there has been no whine since (currently at 93,000 miles). I think the conclusion was that some axle housings had/have slight casting flaws such that the gears can never be set up exactly right, and thus the seemingly unfixable whine.

Try pushing for replacement of the entire assembly.

Typical complaints are on the 9.75" version. The fix isn't a "part number". Yes, your dealer sounds normal.....aka useless. It could be any number of problems, each requiring an expert hands-on evaluation.

-How much it cost all together?
-And now long of an installation was it ?

I’m replacing everything myself including wheel bearings & axle seals for less than $300.
All parts, except wheel bearings & axle seals, will be purchased from Consolidated (866-798-8726).
Plan to do it sometime in May.
Will let you know the outcome & any “tips & tricks”.
