gearing for gas milage?

gearing for gas milage?

has any one changed ther gearing for gas milage? Im thinking 1995 f150 5.0 w3.55 to a 3.08 or 2....some thing out of a full size van. what do you guys think? wast of time or good idea?

well, your city mpg would be horible with that high of gears, you would get better mpg highway, but as soon as you brought it down past 55 you would be sucing the gas and the tranny would be searching for the right gear it would also put more stress on the tranny, i think all in all it is a bad idea also you would lose alot of performance

I have to agree with Bigtruck. I don't think the improvement that you would see on the highway would offset the cost of the new gearing. Plus the loss of MPG in the city. Hope this helps.

gotcha !

what brought the thought up was a guy I used to work w/ a few years ago had a 96 full size ext. cab chevy w/ a 350 he swore up and down he got 25mpg he checked it upteen times. so the only thing that made real sence is he had a 3.08 or 2.... in the rearend. he only lived 10 miles from work so it wasnt all highway driving. I thought that same type of rear end would work in a f150, but maybe not a good idea . anyway...... thanks.

his speedo was probably off giving him a false reading so he thought he was getting better mpg
