Ford Quoted approximately 4k for new gears

While hanging out at the local Ford dealership I asked for a quote on 4.11 gears, front and rear. My truck is an 03' f150 fx4. LS diffs and stock 3.55's. They told me it would be around 4k and that he will call me tomorrow with an exact quote.

Not that I'm planning on paying anyone 4k for gears, just curious... what are you guys paying? I have seen folks roll off numbers in the neigborhood of $1200 - $1500, guess I'm not sure if that's for a 2wd or a 4wd?

I have modded my ride to the point now that all it really needs is a lift, I have the tires and wheels but they aint' goin' on until its geared first and then lifted. Any suggestions? I want to have this done right.

Also, what are people using for brakes? Everything I see is slotted and I don't want slotted, I just want bigger.

Any and all comments/suggestions will be much appreciated

That price is crazy!!!!!! I worked at a ford dealership and did a lot of diff work and gear changes. We charged around $1000 labor plus the price of the gears, bearings, seals and fluid for a total of around $1700.

dang, thats too high. Call some shops who work on dragstrip cars since they almost always change ring and pinions to get better e.t.'s.

The highest price I found was $1700, I paid it because they guaranteed no gear noise.

On my 2wd it was a total of U$875 after taxes. That included new Ford performance gears, all new bearings etc, fluids and roadtest with a 12 month warranty. All done by a local racing shop that specialized in tranny and gear stuff.

$4K for gears... I guess the service manager forgot to mention the cost of his Hawaiian vacation that you'll also be paying for.

$1634 for 4.56 front and rear, all new bearings, fluid, seals, etc... The shop completed the work in one day. I wouldn't let Ford touch the gearing, especially at $4k! Get to a good racing shop like these other folks and have it done faster, better, and cheaper!

Glad to see you are doing gears at the same time. I didn't think I would have to originally, but the torque converter stayed permanently unlocked, and after 9 months I had had enough. Good luck -

Mike

$1634 sounds more like it. The sales guy at Ford just got back to me this morning, gave me a new quote of $3300. I told him it was too steep but thanks anyway. Mentioned some more realistic numbers to him and he immediately came back with a 10% discount offer...

I'll go with a local shop, I have a pretty reputable 4x shop here in town. They are religiously closed on weekends because they go wheeling so it makes it a little hard to get the rig in on a workday but I'll do what I gotta do.

BTW - Thanks for all the feedback, it's been much appreciated.

I just had a set of 4.10's gears put in the front and rear axles on my 2000 4x4 at 4WheelParts for $1350 and couldn't be happier.

Outside of warranty work, I really don't know why anyone ever goes to the dealership for service...you could get a three-legged goat to do the work with better turn around time.

That aside, pakager, did you get the gears non-ford specific (performance gears) or did you go with the shops in house gear set-up? Recommend any LS brands?
