Exclamation Stiff transfer case, pooped outta 4x4

Over the past 2 months my transfer case has slowly gotten more & more difficult to shift. It's finally gotton so bad that I often have trouble shifting on the fly & just the other day it popped out on a rough desert road (class I -II jeep trail). I am vacationing in S Utah & may be on some difficult terrain in the next couple of days (class III thru IV-) and am a little worried. Had a mech check tranny & transfer case levels in Green River & he said they looked fine. I've read posts about greasing the linkage, but would like to wait till after my break. Do you think I'm safe waiting or should I try to get something done ASAP.

Any advice?

glasswave, you didn't give us any vehicle info! If you are driving a late model, the front diff. is shifted into and outof 4X4 by two vaccum lines coming from 2 control valves mounted on the firewall on the passinger side. These 2 line run down to the front diff. where they pull the control arm left and right to lock the diff. into or outof freewheeling.

The vaccum motor and lines are a little hard to find on diff. they are hinden by the plastic shield coming down over the diff.(acts as a drain trough when changing oil).

Check for a leak in those vaccum lines, or the control valves.

Good luck and happy 4 wheeling

Question

Sorry, thought the relevant info would show in my sig. I've since returned from S Utah w/no further problems, but the case is still stiff sometimes. It's a 2000 xlt supercab long bed w/4.6L , auto, limited slip rear, manual shift Transfer case.

Any advice?
