8.8 Open Diff -> Trak Loc
My neighbour wants to put a trak loc unit in his 98 F150. We know it has the 8.8 open diff which is 31spline. The stock trak loc unit would work awesome for him. Do you guys know of anywhere (cheap) to get the unit? Do they show up used very often? What other vehicles are they used in?
We are just interested in the chunk (diff housing, clutches, side/spider gears etc). Ford racing wants $375CAD with no warranty, or $550CAD with a 12 month/20k warranty. That is plus carrier bearings.
Thanks for any help.. ps a shop will be setting them up, we just want to get a hold of the parts.
Thanks.

e-bay !!
Keep an eye on e-bay. I watched several units come and go and finally found one I was comfortable with, good seller, low mileage unit. I got it for $50USD + shipping. Shipping to AK was a bear, but still total was <$120. Had a local shop install it with my 3.73's this summer. Works great, nice and tight. It has made a 100% difference this winter.
There are quite a few units on e-bay...just look for one from someone who is reputable. You can find some units that have been rebuilt (new clutch pack) on there as well..
Good luck.

You might do a search (must join to search) at www.fullsizebronco.com. I've read that the carrier from a Ford Explorer 8.8 would fit. Most are LS. There is much info there on 8.8 rears.

I have an open diff, would i be able to just buy the limited slip diff clutches and install them into my differential or do I have to buy an entire new unit?
I'm not going for anything with super performance, I just want to get up hills easier on slick days in the winter. The one wheel peel just doesn't do the trick.
