Fuel Filter

I need to know how to replace the fuel filter on my F-150. I removed the retaining clips and tried to pull the connections from the filter, but without any luck. I don’t want to screw up something, but it doesn’t seem they should be that hard to pull off. Is there some trick to doing this?

I do not know if your year is similar to the 2005, but I just did mine. It requires a special tool that I got at AutoZone for $10. Do a search on the subject of changing fuel filter and you will find detailed instructions.

bluejay43200 Thanks for the information. It made me refresh my memory. Years ago I made some tools to disconnect the AC connectors on a Ford Ranger. There were made from 1/2” copper couplings and they worked very well. I served an apprenticeship as a Marine Machinist and don’t believe in getting a bigger hammer. I like to know what’s inside before I apply force. One thing about these forums, someone usually has the information you are looking for.

Is your F-150 a 2004 by chance? I have a '04 4X4 and am a bit hesitant to change my own fuel filter because of my confusion in reading the other posts concerning clips and pressure.

Has anyone recently done a '04?

04 is the same as the 05, I just did mine last week. On one side there is a metal clipyou unhook and rotate out of the way, then insert the tool, push on the tool and the pull the filter out of the line. On the back side ther is a clip that I took needle nose es and pulled back out of its slot, insert the tool, push on it and pull the line off. The filter is wedged in, you slide it out. Very simple if you have that tool. You will save a lot of money.

p. s. I didn't do the relief valve as my truck had sat all night. I had no pressure, just the gas running out of the filter.

Best way to relieve the fuel pressure, is to pull the fuel pump fuse with the engine running. You can also press the schrader valve if you can find it.
