Manual transfercase lever being a pain...

Truck: 1995 F150 4x4 manual transfer case, manual transmission and manual locking hubs.

I'm having issues pushing the transfercase shift lever down so that it will go from 4h to N. I can't seem to get the right angle on it to push "down", it just seems to want to go back to 2H. I can go under the truck and pull the mechanism down so the pin, which blocks you from shifting straight back from 4h to N, can clear the "wall" on the blocking plate.

The shift lever doesn't appear to be bent or out of position. What's the secret to pushing down? How much force is normally required?

I sprayed it with lube. I guess I'll just saturate it everday for a while.
