Gears/limited slip ???

I was quoted $1450 to have 4:10's installed on both ends from 3:73's. Then the guy asked if I wanted a posi rearend and I said no. I said I want to remain a limited slip. He said a limited slip would cost an extra $300 or so. Maybe he didnt think I had a limited slip or something. Possibly a communication problem.

So, the question is: Can I use the existing limited slip or does a new one have to be purchased with the new set of gears?

Any help with this is appreciated. The truck goes in tomorrow.

What he probably thinks is that you want to install limited slip into the FRONT differential. Don't do it unless you are only intending to drive this truck off-road only. There are gear type limited slip diffs that would work for the front (such as Torsen) but that will cost at least $450. Don't install a clutch type limited slip system into the front diff. The truck will chatter around any turns you make. Good luck!

Well, I am thinking that the 4:10 gears for the factory carrier are more expensive than the gears for the posi diff (due to design/clearance issue).

As for the expense, only YOU can determine if it is RIGHT. I personally would goto a good locker If I were making that kind of investment. You could prolly recoup some of your expense by selling the factory limited slip unit on Ebay.

Heck if I were going to have my gears replaced front and rear, I would shoot for an Air or Electric locker for the front diff too!!!!!! Then, when I shift and lock everything I would be in a REAL 4x4. not a 2x4 or 3x4 (like I am now).

Good luck

I got 4.10's for the front and the rear and detroit tru-tracs for both the front and rear for just under $1200. It's another $700 to install. The tru-trac is a gear driven limited slip and works well with the CAD (center axle disconnect) in the front axle. Hope this helps.

Carriers are designed around the ring and pinion gears. Not the other way around. The same ring and pinion can be used regardless of which type of differential is being used.
