rear diff locks when 4wd is engaged

I have been working on my parents 1994 F-150 6cyl. 4X4. The 4wd on this truck has been used like 3 times in the last 6 years, so it doesn't shift in and out of 4wd real great. I lubed the linkage and got it shifting ok, but when it is put in 4 high or low it seams like the rear diff locks. If I make a tight turn the inside wheel skids almost the whole way. I don't have a lot of experience whith 4wd trucks, is this normal? Thanks

What you are experiencing is binding. Driving in 4x4 on a dry surface is hard on the system. Wheels travel at different speeds when you are turning. On a slippery surface in 4x4 whey will slip but on a dry surface they will bind. The tire(s) with the least traction will skip or slide.
