Gear Oil Smell From Heater When In 4x4
Hello Gang,
I've been lurking here for a while. I just got my first Ford Pickup a few weeks ago.
I bought a 2003 Supercab Lariat, FX4.
Anyways to make a long story short when I use 4x4 on the truck and the heat/defog is on (I live on the wet coast of BC) I get a faint smell of gear oil coming through the heating vents?
I have a 3 year extended warranty on the truck and plan on having them check it out but wanted to get some feedback so I am armed before going to them.
The truck only has 49,000 KM's on it.
What could be causing that smell?
Only in 4x4 and only when the heater is on.
Carl

The only thing that I can associate with 4x4 gears and the AC system is vaccum.
The front axle is actuated by vaccum diaphram (two I think) which is/are mounted on the firewall near the heater thingy and one on the front diff. If they were to inhale gear oil from the differential, then you could end up with gear oil on the firewall.
I would suggest a careful inspection of the 4x4 vaccum system.
