Got 4H, but no 4L

Hey Guys! I have the manual 4x4. I have no problem getting into 4H but when I shift her into 4L nothing happens, no lights or anything. When shifter was in the 4L position all I did have was "2L" so to speak. It wasnt very fun when I had to use 4H to get neighbor unstuck and the clutch kept slipping. Any help is greatly appreciated! Thanks!

I suppose I should mention that I dont have any four wheel drive nor any lights.

Sounds like something is wrong inside the transfer case...

Transfer case sounds fine to me. Sounds more like the front differential. Hubs locked in?? Auto hubs?? Thats where the problem lies

But if 4H is working, then it can't be the hubs.

Z is correct, it has to be the transfer case, all the hubs do is lock the wheels to the driveshaft, if they weren't working correctly you wouldn't even have 4H.

But you say the clutch was slipping when you pulled someone out in 4H, that would indicate a clutch problem as well.

Shifting from 4H to 4L doesn't reduce the strain on the drive train, just the engine, which should stall before the clutch slips in either 4H or 4L.

neutral

maybe it is like the nissan, you can only put 4l by putting the gearbox into neutral

As far as I know, you have to be in neutral to shift into 4L on any Ford 4X4, except for maybe full time systems, but even then I think it's the same.

I had the 4L problem before this happened. I think the clutch was just slipping because the other truck was just too darn heavy since it was sunk down in the mud so much. Thanks for all your suggestions!

Again, the clutch should not slip at all, it should kill the engine.

Oldest trick in the book for testing a clutch the hard way, put her in 4th or 5th and let it out, if it kills the engine you're good, if it slips, look for another car to buy.

But obviously the clutch issue is not related to the transfer case issue.

You say you get nothing when you hit 4L, no indicator light, no enagement noise? Is that even if you shift from 4H to 4L? 2H to 4L?

Actually I accidentely did that the other day, except it was third or forth gear I think.

I just went out and fiddled with the 4wd, now im not getting any 4wd or lights coming on. When I put her in 4H, its not in 4wd but something must be engaged cause theres an extra strain on the engine (noticeable diff. than 2wh.) When I put her in 4L from any combonation all I get is 2 wheel Low Range. Maybe something I outta have the dealer look at?
Thanks a lot guys!

The dealer? Do they charge for the **** lube too? Find a few reputable shops and see what they say.

Are you sure that you are getting only 2L? Will 4H engage right now?
