Yet another gear question

Hey fellas,

I have a 2000 f-150 w/ a 4.6 2WD. I have the stock rear-end which has a non-LS 3.08. I have recently installed 265/75 BFG AT's and they are killin the trucks performance. I have already made up my mind to get a tuner from troyer but my question is which gears should i get when i get new ones. I am thinking 3.55 or 3.73. I do not want to sacrifice gas mileage but want more get-up-and-go. BTW the truck has a 4R70W tranny. Also i am thinking about adding a LS to the rearend for better traction when not on the road. Is this a good idea?

Why Ford would ever put 3.08's in a truck is beyond me. Plain stupidity IMHO.

If it were up to me all of these trucks would have 3.55's standard and 3.73's and 4.10's as options.

With the tires you put on I would recommend 3.73's. Them are the same size tires that come on the 4x4's with the ORP to me they go together very well with the 3.73's. They aren't bad with the 3.55's, but being you have the 4.6 I'd opt for 3.73's.

You could put in 4.10's that would get that truck scooting along like nobodys business, but the rpm's may run a little higher than you'd like at highway speeds.

I definately do recommend putting a LS in the back.

Thanks for the info Krusher. Your right about the 3.08 being stupid. And what makes it even dumber is my truck came w/ a tow package. Any particular brand of gears and LS to go w/? I was thinking maby a detroit tru-trac or something for the LS. Any opinions are welcome. Also who makes a good set of gears and what is a fair install price roughly?

Assuming that your orginal tires were 235/70/16, your original tire height was 29". Your new tire height is 31.6". With those new tires, and a 3:08 differential, your actual gear ratio is 2:83. Either way, that's a tall ratio. Your actual tire size change wasn't really too radical, but because the 3:08's were boggin ya down anyway, you're really feelin it now. A 3:36 gear (if there were such a thing) would bring you back to stock. The next closest is 3:55, but I'd skip it and go to 3:73, unless you plan to go bigger with the tires later, in which case the 4:10 is for you.

Thanks for the info muddytruck. I am not planning on a lift or bigger tires so i think i will go w/ the 3.73's. I was so surprised how much of a difference the new 265/75's made. My truck is a dog now. I see a 3.73 LS w/ a troyer tuned Xcal2 in my future

Upon further contimplation(sp), i think im gonna opt for a set of 4.10's. Oh, and another question... whats the difference between 4.10's and 4.11's?

f150driver86,
Hey, man, I've got the post right above yours in which I'm actually looking to trade my 3.55 for a 3.08. Yeah, I know it's the reverse of what most people wanna do with their trucks, but right now I need my truck to be more like a huge Honda Civic (fuel mileage-wise) than an actual truck. Like I said, my 5-speed gears me down enough anyway. I wish we were closer to each other, 'cause I'd be willing to trade with you on my end. Good luck!

Fordman3,

I would trade w/ you but i really am thinking w/ goin w/ 4.10's. But i guess i could trade w/ u then still do the change. My diff is a non-LS ( boo hiss) so you might not it.

Adam06FX4,

How many rpm's(apprx) will i be turning at say 70 mph w/ 4.10's? I have a 7R40W if it helps. Do u think it will spin the tires off the line?

f150driver86,
Does your truck have rear disc brakes, or drums? I guess there's a question as to what year disc brakes started being installed. I thought it was '00. Thanks.

Fordman3,

My '00 XLT had disc brakes out back. Good for stopping but bad for powerbreaking on dry pavement w/ a 3.08 rearend ( it wont ). Hopefully some 4.10's will cure that?
