My engine rpm with 4.10 gears - with pics
I've spoken to a few folks who think that short gears will give these trucks a top speed of 90mph at redline, and will kill your mpg. I think it stems from the old days, when cars had narrow-range 3-speed trannies, and not wide-range overdrive units.
IMHO these trucks love short gears.
My mpg didn't changed noticably.
But your results may vary.
Here are some pics of my speedo at various higway speeds.
I run 4.10 gears with 285-60R18 street tires...the equivalent of about a 31-inch tire.
Sorry for the low quality...my cameraphone is teh suck.

Their website is cr@py but they do good work.
The've also done a bit of custom stuff for that TV show Overhaulin'.

I wouldn't dismiss the gears, they multiply the torque to the wheels. Around town your truck will be peppier and if you can resist the urge to nail it you MPG may stay the same. On the highway it will be turning less than 150 more rpm but it will be higher up in the torque range where the engine can make more power. Don't forget your bigger tires are heavier so they require more power to turn.
