Should I get 4.10's

Hey guys I need you insight on a question. My 05 F-150 has the 3.73 gears in it and was wondering if switching the gearing to 4.10's would give me the best performance change for the money. The only performance change ive added is a Flowmaster exhaust and a Edge Programmer. I have a FX4 so I will need to get Front and Back done correct?? or could I just get the back done? Also what are the Pros and Cons to getting this change. Any Info would be great!!!!! Thanks Guys!!

IMHO gears are the best thing you can do, short of forced induction.

4.10s on street tires is a great mod. You will notice it, more than all of your other mods combined IMHO.

4x4 = front & rear

I don't think there are any cons...I've yet to read anyone reporting reduced MPGs, myself included. But lots of people have been happy with this mod on street/stock-sized tires.

Do you think I should go to a higher gear 4.30's ?? maybe since I have the 3.73's now?? Or do you think 4.10's are enough?? Keep in mind that I dont tow a lot, but I do tow our 2 ton deck boat. If I do go bigger how bad will my top end be hurt?? I know the main complaint is you lose MPG and Top Speed but with the EDGE programmer i gained around 2mpg and I can raise my top speed limiter. So even if I do loose a couple MPG's it'll be like stock was
Thanks for the info, Sorry about all the questions guys..... but the only stupid question is the one never asked LOL

P.S.-I will also be getting bigger tires in the future, nothing crazy but a little bigger, i'll still have my stock rims.

On stock tires, I think 4.10s are great. I don't know anyone who has gone to a shorter gear, but 4.30 is only 5% shorter than 4.10.

Your top speed won't be reduced. These are wide-range 4-speed trannies, not old-school 3-speed units. Overdrive is very tall. You will never reach redline in OD. I've got a blower and I can't do it. And after trying it, I'll never do it again (calculated out, I was going over 130 mph).

I have yet to read anyone get reduced MPG by re-gearing.

Your highway acceleration...your low-speed aceleration...your acceleration at any speed...will be significantly improved.

Your life will be happier, there will be peace on earth, and you'll discover a rich uncle has just left you a fortune

What has the 4.10s done to your gas mileage? I've got 265/75/16 tires (31.6") and do 90% highway driving.

I have 4.10s with 31.9" Pireilli tires and they haven't hurt my gas mileage at all...I probably do anywhere from 67% to 75% city driving though...

The gears really rev up the engine quickly and put the truck in the power band quicker...I'd go with the 4.10s if you're staying with stock tires...if you're going with bigger tires later, you might want to hold off and get the proper gears to fit your tires...4.56 gears for 35" tires, etc...

My tires are already oversized...factory was 255/65/15. I'm at 265/75/16 now. I'm just wanting the lower gears for yanking my boat around, but am unsure of what it will do to my highway mileage.

I got my truck with a 6" lift and 315/70/17 tires with 3,55 gears, 11mpg, 1800rpm at 70mph.Then got and 21 foot toybox, Played hell trying to pull it with that tall of gears so had 4,56s put in, now run 2400rpm at 70mph....still get 11mpg

The performance is well worth it. Other then a blower or a shot of NOS, that is the biggest performance gain you will see.

Unfortunately nobody currently makes 4.30's for the front end of our trucks. only the rears. so if you have a 4x4 your choice is between 4.10's or 4.56's which is a bummer because i am running 33's and i think the 4.30's would be perfect for me.
