Mines a '98 Lariat offroad package, with 3.55 LS, and I have no problem keeping up with anyone in the mud... At least anyone running the same size or slightly larger tires than me. I 285/70/17 Toyo O/C A/T's, and get plenty of traction in the mud.
I've always felt both front tires pulling in 4WD.
But here's where I'm confused. If there's a LS or open diff in the front, why is it recommended not to drive in 4WD on dry pavement? Even on hard packed dirt I can the front binding when turning when in 4WD. If it's an open diff, why?

When you are in 4x4 the transfer case links the front wheels to the rear wheels.
Because the front wheels do not rotate at the same speed as the rear wheels the system will bind. The weakest point is the chain in the transfer case. Snap that and you will walk home. I have a friend who drag races his Reg cab 4x4 SuperDuty. It has a modded 6L that puts over 500 hp and 1100 lbs/ft to the wheels. He races in 4x4. The tires actually spin on the wheels. To verify that, he marked the tire and the wheel and after a run the mark on the tire had moved. The chain on the SD t-case is a little bit bigger than the F-150's.

What had happened was that while turning around on a grid road my front passenger tire went off the edge and into the hardpack snow of the ditch (with all the snow we have you couldn't tell where the road ended and the ditch began). It was only in about a foot or foot and a half and dropped down about a foot or so. All of the other three tires were touching ground. I engaged 4LO but could still only get one front tire and one rear tire to turn. To look at the truck you would have figured no problem getting out, but I couldn't even get it to rock for me.

Fords LS suck. Ive had a number of Mustangs also and everyone had the Ls swapped for an eaton. People started saying you must drive hard or beat on your cars and trucks, thats crap I took care of all my cars and the LS still sucked. Ill be swapping out the LS on this truck also for some E-lockers.

Yea LS sucks... Im going to need more traction too. I heard the Lock-Rights were pretty good at a decent price..
