my 03 is an fx4. what is the difference between that and a 4x4? also, i was told that fx4's came with 3.73's. it may be an engine difference, but my 90 has 3.73s and my 03 doesnt seem nearly as responsive.

 

FX4 is an appearance/suspension package.

You get on FX4
Painted bumpers, skid plates, Limited slip rear (LSD), rancho shocks, unique interior package. 3.55 or 3.73 are available, FX4 rims.

on 4x4 you get:
4wd.
Optional:
Limited slip, skidplates, choice of rims/tires including 17,18,20 inch rims, choice of 3.55 or 3.73

I have an XLT and it has the optional skid plates and the optional LSD. I have the chrome 18's with 3.55 gears. I wanted a column shift and didnt want to spend the extra cash on leather, so I went with the XLT.
