Tow Package

How can you tell if your truck is set up for towing...my buddy is looking to buy a 05 FX4 and it does not have a tow package...is there a way to tell if you can just hook up and hitch and the truck already has a tranny cooler and the right gears and such , or if you would need to install them after the fact

ok... to hook up a hitch, you would probably want to use an impact wrench/air tool... on my f150, the holes to bolt the hitch were already drilled in the frame. if they weren't, however, the hitch installation instructions would tell you where to drill... you want to get at least a class III hitch btw, a weight distribution system would increase the recommended weight rating as well. if it didnt come w/ a tow package, you would probably have to install a tranny cooler yourself. however, you may not need one depending on what you are towing, but they are a great idea. the gear setup you would only need to change based on what you are towing, it is set at factory to balance both fuel economy and capacity. you would also need the brake light wiring, which probably came w/ the truck. hope this helps, good luck...

Check the GVW rating on the door sticker it will tell you exactly what size trailer you can pull with your truck. do not exceed that rating without proper modifications.
