Then you did something wrong. There is no gasket from the factory. RTV is all that's needed to seal it, but you must prep both surfaces properly and allow it to cure a bit before refilling.
Scrape both surfaces clean, then wipe both of them down with Mineral Spirits to dissolve any remaining gasket material. Clean all dripping oil off the faces, and spray them down with brake cleaner or alcohol to remove any residue. Apply a narrow bead around the perimeter of the cover or the housing (no need to do both) being sure to make a complete ring around the bolt holes. Install the cover without shifting and sliding it around any more than necessary. Torque the bolts to (IIRC) 13 ft*lbs, and do it evenly in stages all the way around the cover so as not to distort it. The longer you can let it cure before refilling, the better off you are.
I've never had one leak after doing it that way.
