Question Axle Ratio Ring and Pinion Questions

I recently bought an '07 Ford F150 Screw 4x2 with a 4.6 v8, 265/60/18 tires, and 3.55 axle ratio. Too doggy on take offs and going up hills for me. I am thinking about ording a new ring and pinion set but before I do is there a particular brand I should go with; is one better than another? Should I go with 3.73 or 3.90? I do plan on getting 275/65/18 tires at a later date.

I was looking at Motive Gear's "stock performance" 3.73 or their "high performance" 3.73 or 3.90.

Any advice or experience on brands or ratios is appreciated. Thanks.

I love Ford's 3:73 gears in my 2007. If you don't use the Ford gears, installed by Ford, I'm pretty sure your warranty for just about anything powertrain related will be void.

F151, thanks for the reply. When I ordered the '07 gas prices were starting to set new highs and I thought the little extra hp the '07 4.6L had would pull it okay and get better mileage. I could kick myself for not ordering the 3.73 from the beginning. It would have been the best $50 investment and improvement. If anybody is reading this get the 3.73! You are right about the warranty aspect. Not to jinx myself I have had few problems with my Fords and what does go wrong I have been able to fix myself. I have a great dealer (Jennings Anderson Ford) but I get satisfaction out of doing it myself and knowing how it was done. Glad you are enjoying your truck and thanks for the feedback.

The difference between 3.55s and 3.73s is pretty much nothing. I've never heard of anybody making 3.90s (that's not to say that nobody does, though). I'd go with 4.10s if I were you.
As far as quality goes, I think any brand will do. As long as they are broken in properly and not used under extreme conditions, the cheaper ones should last just as long as the more expensive ones. The only difference is that the cheaper gear sets will probably be a bit noisier.

LBT, I too am going to be changing my gearing in my truck. I have a 05 4x2 4.6 w/ 3.55 and no limited slip (open diff). It was recommended by my local shop to go with the 4.10 gears. They recommended Ford OEM gears first or West Coast Gears. Also if you have no limited slip like me you may want to put in a limited slip diff while your changing out the gears. It will save a few hundred dollars in labor. I'm looking to go with Auburn Gear's HP series limited slip diff.

I have a 5.4 w/3.73's and wish it had 4.10's. I would not waste my money going from 3.55 to 3.73, not alot of change imo. Just my 2 cents.....
