Making sure 4x4 works..?

Hey guys

With winter just around the corner, I want to make sure my 4x4 is working correctly.

It's a 1999 5.4L, 158Kmiles, electronic (Shift on the fly?) transfer case..

All the lights seem to go on just fine when I shift into 4WD High, and I hear the clicks of the relays(Im guessing?) Behind the dash. When I shift into 4WD Low, I hear the clicking as usual, and the 'clunk'.. and I can definately tell that 4WD Low works fine when I take off and drive a few feet in it, but Im having a hard verifying that 4WD High is working properly as there isnt much difference in the way it drives. Even though Im only driving a few feet away (dont want to drive too far/fast in 4WD High on normal road conditions..) I cant notice a difference in the way it drives.

My question is... Is there an easy way to verify that it works 100% properly? Does the fact that 4WD Low works absolutely mean that 4WD High works properly as well?? Thanks!

my quick/easy method would be to wait for a nice rainy day... then put it in 4WD High and romp on it.
... If only the back wheels spin... you're SOL.
... if all 4 wheels spin -or- it grabs and goes... you're good

yeah thats how found my problem pulling fence post out of the ground and the 4x4 light was on and the driveshaft was locked in and only had power to the rear wheels yeah you should also have some resistance when turn in 4x4, should be able to feel it, and i didn`t have that feel in mine and i knew something was wrong

Jack up the front end, chain the back end around a pole or a tree, and put it in 4wd - see if the front wheels spin.

I wouldn't think a 4.6 would have much of a problem spinning front wheels that are off the ground...........

Take the truck to some dirt, put it in 4WD and slowly turn a sharp corner. Unless you're on slick mud, you should be able to hear/feel the tires on the inside of the corner slipping against the ground as they make up for travelling a shorter distance than the tires on the outside of the corner.

Dont mean to hijack a thread, but I have a problem with my 97, Auto, manual lever, for some reason I try and put it in 4hi and my 4x4 light doesnt come on at all on the cluster, when I put it in 4 lo, the low range lights up but not the 4x4. I just bought this truck, when I first tried the 4x4 light came on. Any help would be appreciated.

Chew, if you can verify that it's in fact engaging 4WD, your bulb is probably burned out.

seriously?

Lol, seriously? How to verify 4x4 works? Step 1. Take it out in the dirt or your front yard 2. put it in 4x4 hi 3. Floor the gas pedal, your front wheels will spin if its working. Hell, my 06 f150 with 5.4 will spin the stock 32x11 tires 4x4 hi on dry pavement so your truck should have no problem in the dirt.....

If you doubt your truck, get out the hose and make some mud for yourself! lol
