Gears

I'm running 3.55 gears right now, thinking about 3.73's. Any thoughts on this. The 3.55's are non-limited. What sould i go with?

Not worth the expense to go up only 1 step. Do it right and get 4.10's.

I agree. And just to avoid any confusion, the gear ratio has nothing to do with your carrier (ie: limited slip, open). They are completely separate things.

the 3.55 is really good at top end, but all i what is a just a little more ump on the take off. to me the 4.10 is just too much. i'm not really using this truck for racing. its a every day truck. just need alittle more take off for those chevy guys that pull beside me at a red light. not say i don't have anything for them now, just want to leave them futher behind.

Forget those Chevy guys!! Let them go ahead and think they are beating you, ease up on the throttle....... when they get caught doin 60mph in a school zone, you will see them pulled over, and then you can leave them behind, laughing at their dumb a$$es for thinking the street is a place to race, and risk everyone elses life for thinking they have a cool truck
If that does'nt work for you, buy you a bad motor scooter ( Ninja, Hayabusa, etc) if you are looking to save gas and beat those chevy guys!!
Jus my $.02, if i wanted to race, i would save it for the track on sunday

you will never feel the difference between 3.55 and 3.73. total waste of time and money. 4.10 isnt that big of a jump. even 4.30 isnt that big of a jump from 3.55

4.30s would be too low for stock tires. I think 4.10s would be perfect.

I think you'll wind up kicking yourself if you get 4.10's especially if you do alot of highway driving. My buddy has 4.10's in his supercharged 4.7 dakota. It sits at about 3k rpms when you are doing 70. That imco muffler would be extrtemely annoying then. He has a single chamber flowmaster and you cant even have a conversation in that truck because its so loud.. I considered 4.10's for when i get my s/c put on. But driving 5+ hours at almost 3k rpms would be EXTREMELY annoying to me. Just my .02

And how does that relate to a Ford truck?
There is no relationship between the two. They run different gears, inside different trannies, with different engines, in different trucks from different manufacturers.

Look at the thread I posted...it has pics of speeds and engine RPM.

My E4OD with 4.10s ran 2500 rpm at 80mph
2800 rpm at 90mph.
2200 rpm at 70mph.

adrianspeeder posted a pic turning 3200 rpm @ 94mph.

Gerod posted that he turns 2100rpm @ 70mph in his truck.

These are heavy pigs, and Ford puts very tall gears in the tranny.

Shorter rear-ends help compensate for this with little, it any, mpg penalty...according to a LOT of people on this site.

I'm thinking about gear changes to I have 3.55 open gears in my 99 4x4 I'm wondering how much it costs to change both differentials and how much I would be looking at if I just had it converted to a locking rear end. Any of you guys done it? thanks.
