Post 4.10 Gears

I'm thinking about going from 3.55 LS to 4.10 LS. Any concerns I should be aware of? Also, what kind of cost am I looking at? I assume it has to be changed for front and back since mine's a 4x4....

Thanks for any info.

Yes, if you want to use 4 X 4 you will have to change both.. The only concern is you will turn more rpm's to go the same speed as with the 3.55. This will result in a little less mpg's. But, who cares, look at the performance feel you will get. The pull off the line should be terrific.

You're looking at about $300 per axle in parts, $2-300 for a shop to set up the rear and a bit more to set up the front. You'll probably be very surprised at how little mileage you actually lose and how much performance you gain.
Good luck

Question

strengeranger, ellenberger
i have a question for you guys since you seem to have experience when it comes to gears. I just installed 275/70/16 on my 2WD truck and of course i lost some rpm's sort of speak. I am thinking about installing 3.73 gears. do you guys think i will pickup some of my guts back and are there any drawbacks to this change? also, should i go 4.10? thank you for any help you can give me.

Well, gotta spend it on something.

My local Ford dealer wants $450 per axle just for parts. I laughed.

Anyway, I'll check around for better prices.

Boy, the quotes you all have gotten seem really high. I bought my gears from 4Wheel Parts Wholesalers for $150 per gear(plus $70 for bearings and shims per axle} and had a local shop put them in. $160 for the rear and I removed the front axle myself and took it to them. Saved some money but is easy to do. It cost $120 for it. I did'nt think it was a bad deal for $720.

Your tires are about 3.8% larger if you started w/255/70s or about 7.4% if you started w/ 235/70s. To get back to where you started you'd need either:

3.55 x 1.038 = 3.68 gears
or
3.55 x 1.074 = 3.81

the closest available ratio to these would be 3.73 which is 5.1%. Basically, a change that small in ratio isn't worth the time, money or effort it would take. Either drive it as is or go for the 4.10s (15.5%) to get a real gain in performance for the same bucks.

Squanto,

What brand gears did you order from there? I was looking at their site and they have several.

Thanks.

conqsoft, they were "Genuine Gear", from 4 Wheel Parts Wholesalers. I actually first called Drivetrain Warehouse and that number goes to 4wheelParts Wholesalers, which was fine with me. I think they go for about $165-170 but I just asked them for there best deal and I got them for $149. Not a bad deal! I did purchase my lifts, wheels and shocks from them but they did not know that when I called. I just said "I had ordered from them often". They have always had good service, so no hesitation from ordering them.

Conqsoft, man you keep forgetting you live in NC, "the land of High prices".
When you get your gears (at a good price) why not use the place where you had your Pace Edwards installed? Can't think of their name?/this happens to me alot..
I thought they were a pretty good size shop, that could work on any type truck.........

I installed the Pace-Edwards myself.

I WON'T be doing that with the gears, however.

Cool

HI!.. The dealer I bought the truck from did the installation. Total price after buying - 4oz. friction modifier, PRECISION GEARS 4.10 (ring + pinion), tube of silicone (for inspection cover), pinion nut, cruch collar, and 4 1L bottles of REDLINE synthetic rearend oil was just under $1000.00(CAN). It only took them 4 hours to do the installation. WOW what a difference. As soon as I picked up my truck I drove it around a little to make sure everything was working fine. Then the test. I drove out to the local "street" dragstrip and made a few runs. Before I use to hit about 89mph in the 1/4 mile, but now I hit 94mph. Not bad, 5mph increase. The truck is much more responsive than before and you barely have to touch the gas pedal and your off, FAST! I lost roughly about 8 kph in each gear compared to the 3.55's, but it is hardly noticable. I can say one thing for sure, and that is that the top speed limiter comes very quickly now. The next thing I have to do is to send my computer into SUPERCHIPS to get the "no start" problem fixed and then I'll be all set for the MILAN meet.
