not sure if ford and gmc and alike, but i had a 4x4 sierra that did the same thing and they told me the same thing that i needed a updatedpart....wells it turned out to be the 4wheel drive acuatorlike 60 buck and 5 min install.. ask them what is is actually called and then call a parts store and see what they can get it for, like i said not sure how similar the 4wheel drives are in them to but worth looking into....

I was having alot of problems with my 98. 4WD wouldn't engage. Had the vacuum lines replaced and it worked better but still had problems with it not engaging.
I had it back to the dealer and found the Front Axel Engage Solenoid was bad. I had it replaced at a cost of $150. It works great now!

That may be your problem.
