Question concerning 4X4

UPDATED:Question concerning 4X4
This morning, in the snow and ice, I tried to go into 4 high and nothing happened, but when I tried 4 low, it went no problem. When I start the truck, both 4 high and 4 low lighs flash on, so I know there isn't a problem there, anyone have any ideas? Thank you in advance.
I have noticed that this is occuring in the morning time, and by the time I get into my truck at lunch and try it, the light lights up and the front engages, any thoughts?

Well, I seem to have run across an odd problem in my truck. I had the exact same symptoms as you did with your truck. I checked the vacuum switches, diaphram, etc. What I figured out tonite is that there is a plastic piece that connects the shift fork to the sliding collar (connects the axle shafts) in the front axle. Well, I dont know what it actually looks like, as it is broke, so the shift fork doesn't move the collar. Easy way to figure out if the issue is in the front axle is this. With the truck in 2wd, safely jack and support the front of the truck so the tires are off the ground. Remove the plastic cover over the engagement lever so you can move the lever. While holding the lever in the engagement position, move the front driveshaft. If you end up getting axle shafts to move, and you feel it "lock in", thats a good sign. On my truck (2003 F150 4x4 stx, ext cab, 5.4, auto), I didn't feel any of that, and found plastic chunks when I disassembled the axle. I'm still working on finding the parts and what all I need.

Joe.Kent,
Check out the vacuum lines going top the Vacuum motor on the front axle. A crack or split will keep the motor from working. On the firewall behind the battery you will find the vacuum solenoids that control the motor. The one closest to the fender controls lockup and the other one the unlock function. The pink line is the one that sends vacuum to lock up the front axle. Remove both the blue and pink lines and apply vacuum to the pink line. It should move the shift lever. If it doesn't hold vacuum follow it to the shift motor and cap it off. Apply vacuum again. If it holds the shift motor is leaking.
