Changing diff. fluid

The dealship said it was $200.00 per axle to change the diff. fluid. I have a local guy who is only charging $70.00 for both (go figure). My question is this just a drain and fill job or is there more to it.I have an 07 Fx4 5.4 3v. I'm also going to use Royal Purple or Amsoil for the lube I do have LS so I will get a can of friction modifier from the dealership for the rear diff.

Your rear end uses 75w140 gear oil. From the dealer it's 21.00 per quart. figure that times 6, plus the friction modifier additive. make sure what ever you use is equal to the 75w140.

Why would you want to change the fluid on a '07?

Use the money on some new lures, rods, reels, gas for the boat, etc..... It's Spring, don'tcha know?

I got stuck in a mud hole and my truck sat in it for about 12 hours this happened at night so I had to wait until the next morning to have the farmer we lease our hunting land from pull me out with his John Deere. I want to be safe I have already changed the transfer case oil and the tranny and they both looked fine.

I really doubt that you'd have water in either diff, but since you want to be safe and change..........The rear doesn't have a drain plug. So, the cover has to be removed. More messy than those with a drain. Plus, now you have to be concerned about the chance of leak after the cover is put back on. Normally, no problems, but..........

The front has a drain plug. Easier to drain, but the fill hole can be a problem. Just can't pour the bottle in. Best to use some kind of pump, hand or mechanical, to get the fluid back in.

It can be a little time consuming, hence the difference in quoted prices. The dealrship is going by a price per hour book. Someone else charges otherwise.

You probably could do it yourself. It's not difficult. Just the cost of fluid.

Nice truck, btw.

The cover uses silicone sealer, not a gasket. Rear requires 75W140 synthetic and modifier, front requires 80W90 or 75W90, synthetic not required.

Bingo. It's easy. I need to do mine when it warms up.

Here's a great write up on how to change your diff fluid.

Royal purple is 6 dollars cheaper than ford oil and has Friction modifier already in it. I would use that. 200 bucks per axle is a rip off. It shouldnt cost $400 to change differential oil.

As far as changing the oil at 65k, I had bad chatter in my rear end since about 42k. I changed mine at 60k and my truck rides so much smoother!!! Change the oil now, your truck will run so much better.

It cost me $35 to do it myself, and that was 3 qts of RP and a tube of silicone.

I going to use the friction modifier from the dealership to be safe. Someone on here had chatter problems using Amsoil but didn't use the friction modifier.

When my truck was brand new, my dealership changed the ATF & rear axle fluids with Royal Purple. If you believe the advertising, Royal Purple is suppose to offer superior lubrication and protection.
