In an explorer it is the norm. I'm building a 93 explorer with a 79 d44/9" 5.13's spooled rear, locked front etc etc. I've spend a lot of time cuddled up in tech pages. They used the 31 spline in the explorer's because of the extra weight of the vehicle compared to the ranger. Good axles, planning on using my old in a hot rod one of these days.

YOU ARE ALL MISSING THE FACT THAT THE FRONT WHEELS WOULD BE SPINNING BACKWARDS WITH THE REAR GEARS OUTTA THAT MUSTANG...
The front gears on our 4x4s are reverse cut gears!

Hello;
I was surfing Craigslist and noticed an 8.8 Traction loc out of a mustang and thought hmmmm, would that work in the front differential of my 02 FX4?!?!
Has any attempted this? Or is there a 'no brainer' reason that it wont work?
If not, I was looking at Detroit EZ locker. Anyone have input on using these? My truck is used mainly on the street, but occasionally in the mud.
I would appreciate any input.

"Reverse Cut" is a misnomer. The gears do not turn in an oposite direction. It only refers to the cut of the teeth on the gears. The drive shaft turns the same way with either reverse or standard cut gears. High pinion axles run "reverse cut" and low pinion have standard.
All he is referring to is running a rear 8.8 carrier in the front 8.8. Aside from spline count it would work if setup correctly with proper gears for the f150.
