Post Differential Wine

Has anyone experienced a differential wine at 40MPH to 45MPH? If so, what is the probible cause and what corrective action can be taken? 2000 F150,5.4L engine,3.55 ratio regular axle.

Diagnosis involves removing the cover and reviewing the gear wear pattern. Read about it on page 17 of axsm-0043.pdf at http://truck.eaton.com/na/service_pr...nuals/axle.htm -- the axle in your truck is smaller than the ones in my illustration, but the general idea holds water, er wine.

Do you have 4x4? You may not be hearing the axle, but the xfer case or transmission instead.

For some whine the cure is worse than the disease -- in those cases, it's best to devote your attention to wine, than to whine.

Willie. While my truck doesn't do it, my wife's Mustang does, when decelerating from between 50-45mph. Ford replaced the ENTIRE rear end (hub to hub) and it's still there. So far they have no other answers.

Cool

What do they make differential wine out of? I might like to try it.
If it's differential whine I can't help you.

Willie. I have the same problem. I took it back to the dealer with 7k miles and they said they counldn't recreate the problem. It's noticable around 45-50 mph. I checked the fliud at 14k and it was down 2 quarts. at 16k I removed the cover and checked the gears and they looked fine. Refilled with 75-140 syn and frition modifier and the noise is still there and I changed the fluid in the whole drivetrain at the same time.

Gentlemen: Many thanks for your comments on differential "wine" and differential "whine".

If the differential on my new 2000 Ford F-150, Flareside continues to "whine", I may have to consider "wine" as the corrective action for this problem. Again, many thanks for the help.

Have a similar whine in my '99. Dealer replaced the crown gear and pinion and bearings and then the second time around the entire differential - housing and all. Still there - maybe even a little louder. Very frustrating. They tell me it will never break down but it's still noticable when crusing the strip. Would much like to get rid of it.
Dealer claims that Ford tells him that the gears are square cut and will whine at certain speeds. sounds like a brush off eh!

Voyageur: Thank you for your reply. The Ford dealer tells me differential whine is normal at various speeds. I also have an Expedition with the same differential that does NOT whine. How do you ansewer that? Thanks again for your comments.

Willie, at 6,200 the whine appeared and got worse. They replaced the rear yoke seal once at 5,100. And now the examination revealed it was leaking again....took it in and he said the 3.55 Limited slip is shot! Parts on order to rebuild it and they still need some shims. All this at 6.2K !

Red face

I purchased a '97 F150, 4.6L, used from a non-Ford dealer in April and within 2 weeks realized that there was definitely a whine. It was most prominent when the truck was cold, around 60kph and above, and got louder when making climbing turns (just outside my house is a climbing right turn on an asphalt road). The dealer is currently repairing it, although they haven't given me an idea what they're doing to it.

A co-worker mentioned that his father had an early '97 F150 and had to replace the rear end at 150,000 km and every 150,000 km thereafter. When I started noticing the whine, the truck had about 146,500 km on it.

Not exactly 'happy' to see that this is more than just something happening to me, but I guess I'm more relieved.

Jay911 Jason: Thanks for the differential whine information. My truck has approximately 3,000 miles on it. I would be happy if the problem did not occur until
150,000 miles! Best regards, Willie

Got an update: The non-Ford dealer ultimately has sent it to the Ford dealer, who is replacing the diff.

For what it's worth, Willie, this was 150,000 *kilometers*.. which is about 90,000 miles I think.

Jason: You are very fortunate that the Ford dealer will replace your differential! I think most dealers feel you should turn the radio up loud to offset the differential whine. Best regards, Willie

Check out this rear end cover from Mag-Hytec. It has a lot more oil capicity and seals with an O-ring like aerospace. It has a dipstick and two magnets. It cools about 45 deg F. and looks great. It also adds to the fluid level so as to lubricate the bearings and gears better. This might help the whine. He also recommends the LE gear oils 75w140 synthetic. They have shown lower wear than the Amsoil synthetic 75w90 or the 75w140 by a large amount. This should help you get the maximum amount of gear/bearing life out of your truck. www.mag-hytec.com
