"Whoop, Whoop" from the rear end?

Sometimes in tight, low-speed turns (parking lots, etc), I get a "squeeky" sound from the rear end. It sounds like the trac lok clutches, but this was supposedly rebuilt about 4K miles ago (and there's "fresh" RTV on the cover, so I tend to believe the P.O.) There's no shudder, and the L/S bites just fine. Just the noise. Addition of some friction modifier last fall did not quiet it, either.

Any suggestions? Have I hit on the likely cause?

Thanks.

quite possible that your hearing a bearing going out, this could be either carrier bearings or lack of shims/preload on the bearings.

how old are the bearings?

Well, the truck has 217K on it, and they could be original bearings. No way for me to know if they were changed as part of the "rebuild" or not. I'll have the truck up in the air soon, and will check axle end-play. Any other way (other than tearing it down for visual inspection) to tell a bad bearing?

When I saw the thread title, I immediately thought: "I hear the same thing when I'm getting pulled over".

My guess is a bearing.

Was the "Whoomp" followed by a "There it is!" Sorry, it's early here...barely into my first cup of coffee.

Yeah, yeah. I knew I was opening this up to all kinds of pokes with that description, but that's the sound it''s making!

Sounds like you've got it pretty well figured out, but at idle when im standing dead behind the truck or in the bed, i can hear a whomp whomp too, sounds almost like a huey helicopter. we traced it all the way to the front of the truck, almost sounds like its coming from the fan/belt area...

OK,

If one were to want to change out the carrier bearings, it is a relatively easy task? I've rebuilt the trac-lok rears before. What more is involved?

Thanks.
