Question

Neal, I was considering the 4.10 gear swap.
How much did it cost and where did you get the gears?
We both HAD bascially the same truck (when they used to be stock)
By the seat of the pants feel, do you think it is a better mod than Airaid or Superchip dollar for dollar?
I'm thinking of some 285/75/16s later and don't want to giveup too much power

Question

Neal -
If you're not getting tired of this? I had a '97 w/P235/70Rx16SL tires and 3.08. I am getting a 2000 w/P255/70R16SL and 3.55. How much effect will this have on gas mileage do you think?

Here are the forumulas to calculate tire diameters, RPM and MPH with different combinations:

Tire size/25.4 x aspect ratio x 2 + wheel size = Tire Height Example for 235/70-16 tire = 235/25.4 x 70 x 2 + 16 = 28.95 tire diameter

MPH x Transmission Gear Ratio x 336.14 x Axle Ratio / Tire Dia = RPM

RPM x Tire Dia / Axle Ratio / 336.14 /Transmission Gear Ratio = MPH

------------------
97 4.6 F150, 1/8 = 10.885 @ 64.10 mph, 88 5.0 Mustang 1/8 = 7.191 @ 94.76 mph

Question

Neal, Hi!I want to kindly ask you for your opinion on gears as well. I have a 97 F-150 SC 4x4, 4.6L, 3.55 axle. Recently, I bought new tires. Went from stock; P235/70r16 to P255/70R16. How much HP did I lose and will my fuel economy suffer as well? How far will my speedo be off? To compensate for power loss, can one add a K&N filter or K&N FIPK to gain some Torque or Horsepower back? Is it easy to install? Not a mechanic but willing to try as long as I don't screw something up. Will going from 3.55 gear to 3.73 help or will it matter all that much if I stay with the present setup? Hopefully you or someone can kindly respond. Thanks!!

Cool

HI!... TEEDO :Your stock 235-70-R16 tires are 28.95 inches tall. Your new 255-70-R16 tires are 30.06 inches tall. That's a 1.11 inch difference. Youe new 30.06 are making your 3.55 gears feel like a 3.42 ratio. If you install 3.73 gears with your 30.06 tall tires, the 3.73's will feel like a 3.59 ratio. If you install 4.10 gears with your 30.06 tall tires, the 4.10 gears will feel like a 3.95 ratio. If you want to get back to your origanal gearing then install a set of 3.73 gears. But if you would like a little bit better "GET UP, AND GO" then I would go with the 4.10 gears. By changing your tire size you DON'T loose engine H.P. Your engine is still making the samw power, it's just been mathmatically changed by your gearing. It's hard to explain to someone. I could, but it would take up way too mush space!LOL! By all means though, go get some extra h.p with aftermarket performance products. SUPERCHIP 1ST! (HINT)
