Question ??New Gears??

I'm going to get a 3" body lift and a set of 35" tires. I also want to change the gears!

I have a 2000 4x4 Sport, 3.55 gears
w/ 265/70-17 now. If i go with the 35" tires
what gear should i get? I was thinking 4.56.
What is the cost of doing the gear change? w/ Labor. I know the new fords have a IFS (or some kind of new set-up) front end, dose it cost a lot more to change gears???

thanks

which of the rear axles are you running. i'm having trouble finding new gears for our trucks, but i know they're out there. for 35" tirs, as a rule of thumb, i always multiply the tire size times 0.12 and then, i either go up or down to the closest gears available depending on what kind of driving i like and gas economy preferred.

Question

i'm not to sure on the axle size.
- for your formula. -
if i run it on the stock tires i get 3.78
(or 3.73's) but i have 3.55 so i'm low to start with!
the 35" come out to 4.20 (or 4.10's)
sence i was low to start with the 4.10's should be good!
and i should feel a little improvement!

what about the cost?

First off your axle size should be an 8.8". On your gears general rule of thumb every inch you go up on tire size is the equivlent of going 1/10 higher on your gear ratio and vice versa going to smaller tires. I figured on my computer that you are running a 31.5" tire so going to a 35" tire you would be at the equivlent of a 3.20 gears. If you go to a 4.10 gear your truck would act as if it had a 3.75 gear. I have looked for new gears for my truck as well and the lowest I could find is a set of 4.30 gears which would give a much better 3.95 gear. My recommendation is to go with the 4.10's because the lower you go on gears the worse your milleage and topend.

HI!... GOT MUD? : I ran your gear to tire ratio's through my DRAGMATH program that is specificly designed for this task. Your stock tire size of 265/70/-R17's comes out to be 31.61 exactly. With your stock gear ratio of 3.55, and your 35" tires, this will make your 3.55's feel like a 3.21 gear ratio. (Or FORD's closest gear ratio of 3.27). If you install 4.10 gears in your truck with 35" tall tires, your 4.10"s will feel like a 3.70 gear ratio. (Or FORD's closest gear ratio of 3.73). If you install 4.30 gears in your truck with 35" tall tires, your 4.30's will feel like a 3.88 gear ratio. (FORD's does'nt have a gear ratio close to this). If you install 4.56 gears in your truck with 35" tall tires, your 4.56's will feel like a 4.12 gear ratio. (Or FORD's closest gear ratio of 4.10). I know this is a confusing subject, and I hope this clears things up for you. You forgot to mention if you have a 8.8 or a STERLING 9.75 rear end in your truck. Which is it? Any truck with a 5.4 engine usually has the STERLING 9.75 rear end in it. With you being a 4x4 you will most likely have a 8.8 front axle. The 8.8 rear ends have gear ratio's available for 3.08, 3.27, 3.55, 3.73, 4.10, 4.30, 4.56, 4.88, 5.13. The 9.75 rear end has ratio's available for 3.55, 3.73, 4.10, I've heard of 4.30 ratio but never seen it advertised anywhere, and mabey by now a 4.56 ratio? In the FORD SVO book they show a 4.10 gear set for the 9.75 rear end PART# M-4209-H410, and a 4.10 gear set for the front 8.8 axle PART# M-3410-L410. But remember that 4.10 gears will feel like 3.70's with your 35" tall tires. That will give you a little bit better acceleration from a stop than the 3.55/31.61 tire combo and the gas milage would be almost unchanged. Hope this helps you out and feel free to ask me any more questions.

Question

Say, Neal: You seem pretty well connected to hardware, wonder if you can point me to some info on the innerds of the transfer case and front axle for my truck.

I called someone at Dana -- only to learn that neither the xfer case or the front axle are Dana -- but Ford Proprietary. I'd really like to get into the details of the entire drivetrain -- and am hoping for a set of manuals for my birthday, but until then...

Can you (or anyone else) help?

(oops -- spelled Neal wrong, Doh!)

Hey Neal,
I've got a 99 S/C Flarside 4.6 V-8 4X2 that I changed from the stock 255/70/16 tires and aluminum rims (approx. 50 lbs per wheel) , to the 265/70/17 tires with the chrome ORP wheels (approx. 80 lbs. per wheel) and added 3" Lift. Now I feel like I have acceleration of the line and my shifting seems a little off. I have 3.55 gears and the 8.8 axle. Just wondering if you have any suggestions of a set up that would give me my power off the line but not affect my gas mileage!?! Any suggestions!!! I was thinking 3.73 gears but the more I look at it I'm thinking of going with 4.10.

HI!... DIRTRACKER : I ran your tire sizes/gear ratio's on my DRAGMATH program and came up with the following. Your stock tire size was 30.06 (255/70-R16). Your tire size now is 31.61 (265/70-R17). Right now with your 31.61 tall tires, your 3.55 gears feel like a 3.38 ratio. Now if you install 3.73 gears with your 31.61 tall tires, the 3.73's will feel like a 3.55 ratio. Now if you install 4.10 gears with your 31.61 tall tires , the 4.10's will feel like a 3.90 ratio. Now if you install 4.30 gears with your 31.61 tall tires, the 4.30's will feel like a 4.09 ratio. Now if you install 4.56 gears with your 31.61 tall tires, the 4.56's will feel like a 4.32 ratio. If you want a real good holeshot, I would go with the 4.30 gears, but remember that they will feel like a 4.09 gear ratio. Standing still acceleration will increase a lot but your gas milage on the highway will suffer a bit. If you want a little bit better acceleration but with almost unchanged gas milage, I wood go with the 4.10 gears. But remember that they will feel like a 3.90 ratio. Hope this helps you out.
