06 f150 4x4 shift on the fly noise

06 f150 4x4 shift on the fly noise
I have a strange noise im getting when i try to shift on the fly. sounds like a large thud then some metal on metal rubbing (almost like bad break wear) it stays constant while the 4 wheel is engaged. As soon as I shift back to 2wheel again the noise stops and everything is normal.
The odd thing is, that when I shift to 4high at a stand still, there is NO odd noise at all. But I think the 4 wheel drive only engages 3 of the wheels, I tested in snow the other day and the truck was all over the place.
Good thing I had a light winter in the north east.
I am going to drop the truck off at the dealers next week.
Worst case cenerios's can you guys tell me what to expect money wise. Im not a mechanic and wouldnt even bother to look under the truck so im always afraid of getting robbed.
